About Maya

Maya has been making hats for over 25 years. She loves to travel, beautiful things and cats.

Maya makes hats for both Men and Woman from many wonderful materials including sisal straw, wheat straw and famously Fresh Water Hyacinth, which when processed into a straw is one of the best materials available to the millinery world.  Maya’s Water Hyacinth “Squash Hat”  will retain its shape even when crushed or folded up, all you need  is water and the hat will bounce back to its original shape.

The Maya Neumann brand is available from many wonderful Australian and international boutique retailers, however you can always purchase her hats  directly from her through selective markets and events like Art and Design Markets, Garden shows, Annual Fairs and School Fetes.

I picked up two of your hats during a garden exposition of sorts here in San Francisco, California (US) years ago that I love dearly. A friend visiting from Colombia was admiring one that I was wearing yesterday. She is headed to the Los Angeles area of California, and I was hoping she might be able to find some of your fine hats in that large city. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

      Hi Elizabeth,

I am so sorry about the late reply!
I used to sell my hats through Fred Segal’s in Santa Monica, but no longer. The only place now, is at The Mill Valley Hat Box. Or at the The Hat Shop in Soho, N.Y.C.. If your friend is interested in getting one, she could contact me on mayaneumann@gmail.com, and we’ll work out something.
      Thank you,
      Maya Neumann

I was recently at your hat stall at the Manly markets but left before purchasing one of your Squash Hats. I was interested in the red one and was wondering how I could purchase one now that I am back in Perth. Would I be able to make contact by phone and provide details to purchase if I was to send through the circumference of my head. Could you also advise if you are able to post to me and how much is the hat – is it the same as the price at the Manly stall.

  • christine Priest says:

Dear Maya, I was recently at the lyttelton market in Christchurch. I stopped this woman in the street as she had one of your beautiful hats on, in a deep red/purple colour. I would love to buy one for summer. Where could I purchase one in New Zealand.?. Regards Christine Priest

    • Maya Neumann says:

      Dear Christine,

Sorry about the slow reply, it’s our busiest time of year here and we’ve not had much time to check the site. I will send you an email shortly with pictures of a couple of hats you might be referring to. Then if you like – send me your head size (measure from just above the brow all the way around your head in mm ( average head size is about 57cm). Do you like a short brim or wide brim? What is your height and shape of face? All these details are important to know when choosing the perfect hat.

Once we have found the right hat we can arrange payment either via money order or credit card and send directly to you.

Again, very sorry for the slow reply.

Hi Maya … I have one of your squash hats bought from Bowral Market. I would lke to have it re-dyed. Are you able to do this? I do live in sydney.

    regards
    Louise

    • Maya Neumann says:

      Hi Louise,

Yes we do offer a re dye service, just send the hat in to us, or drop off to us at Paddington Market on a Saturday. Cost of redye is $10. Feel free to call us directly as we only do a redye once a month and only when the weather is sunny, so it would be great to tee it up so you didnt need to be with out hat for long.

      Call us on 02 9361 0905

      Cheers

      Victoria and Maya

Are your hats available in Toronto? I saw them (I think) at Canada Blooms some years ago, and am still regretting not have purchased one!

    • Maya Neumann says:

Ah yes, we get this a lot :) We will come back to Canada one of these days, but not this year, we are really just so small it really is a big deal for us to come all the way over… but we’d love to again, Canada is a wonderful special place… if you like though you can buy online thru this blog, we will send you photos of a selection of hats and you can choose and we will send along, easy as that.

  • Cathy Lunt says:

    Maya,

I love, love, love, your hats and have been trying to purchase one for ages. Friends of mine have bought some of your hats from The One Of A Kind craft show in Toronto in years past. However, I don’t see where I note the colour, size etc. via the link to purchase provided. Do I ‘add to cart’ and then put my preferences in the ‘note to wiki7′ box?

    • Maya Neumann says:

      Hi Cathy,

Thank you for the lovely comments. Message me thru Etsy with the colors you are interested in and i will send you photos of what i have in the colors you like, once we have the hat you like you can buy thru Etsy, I can also size the hat exactly to your head size.

      All the best

      Victoria and Maya

  • Anja says:

    Hi Maya,

Anja here from Germany. I bought a hat at Paddington Market in 2008. It was not made from hyacinte, but from a velvety fabric, rather to be used in autumn and winter. I was just scrolling through the Paddington Market stall list and was wondering if it was at your stall where I bougth the hat? If so, this is to say: I still love it! :) It is cosy, beautiful, reminds me of my grandma who was a milliner and it just makes me feel good. Do you visit Europe with your hats? ;)

Best regards from half-around the world

    Anja

  • Maya Neumann says:

Ah Lovely Anja, Thank you for your kind words and thank you for stopping by. Yes every year we make a small number of winter hats, they are always quite unique. I hope the hat brings you much joy over the years. All the best Maya and Victoria

  • Julie Coburn-Humber says:

Hello Maya, I bought one of your hats around 2002/2003 in Fremantle, Western Australia on a visit there and since then it has travelled all over the world with me. On the tag I have kept it says you will re-dye the hat; is this still the case? Although it has faded to a wonderful blue-grey, I would love to have it returned to its lustrous lilac blue … Now that we are living in Tasmania, it is not so easy to find hats as marvellous as yours. Are you still selling in Freo and if so where? We have friends there who could check out your latest and no doubt greatest creations. Kindest regards … Julie.

  • Sue Veigel says:

Hi Maya, I’m interesred in buying either a blue/purple colour or a burgundy /eggplant colour in your hats. Not sure which brim will suit me as I have a medium to large frame, average height (165 cm), and I’d like a simple style without embroidery. Will you be at Paddington Markets on the 11th November, 2011? Or are you at Manly markets every Sunday? How much are your hats at the markets? I only visit Paddington markets about twice a year, so I wanted to be sure you were there. I regret not buying one a few years ago!
    Regards, Sue V.

  • Janelle Nolan says:
